For our first official songwriting session together we took a song that Lucy had started called 'Over' and began to broaden it out into a folk harmonious masterpiece (or... we started to try!)
Firstly we worked on the chorus, it became apparent that we individually have different ranges and capabilities concerning harmony, so Daisy worked on a lower harmony, Bekah and Lucy share the main middle range melody and I improvised the higher harmony. We had some difficulties to begin with mostly due to the fact that we were trying to remember the lyrics and learn a melody we had never previously heard, eventually we found harmonies that gave the song the elevation it needed. The seconf section of the chorus include a call and response aspect, at first we tried to have 2 singers calling and 2 singer responding using the same melody and pitch however, after deciding that it felt a little flat we introduced more of a canon where the different repetions (that previously made up the call and response) signalled the entrance of a new harmony.
As the session came to an end we began to look toward the opening verse. We liked the idea of Lucy starting the song on her own with guitar and then building more layers of voice and instrumentation as the 2nd A section progressed, I trialled a background piano decoration and will continue to explore this in the next session. As well as this, we discussed the introduction of acoustic percussion as the 2nd verse begins after the first chorus and estab;ished our vision for the song.
Apart from the expected complication which comes with working out how everyone fits into the bands dynamic and style, the session was extremely productive and I look forward to completing the song on Friday.
Thanks
