This song written by Mike Rosenburg (Passenger) is about seeing someone for the first time in a coffee shop, I like the simplicity of the structure and the harmonic progressions but what really shines through here is the use of lyrics, they are extremely well written and match up perfectly with the folky style. I am thinking of using this folk/pop style for my composition as this is the style I usually write songs in.
Musical Features
Frequent syncopation. Triplet and semi-quaver fast motif that is repeated and varied throughout the piece. When these motifs the left hand mirrors the right by playing the notes played in the treble clef as chords in the bass. Dynamically the piece starts piano with subtle rising and falling crescendoes. The middle section is much more forte and accented. Lots of accidentals. Structural Features The piece has three main sections. Starts with a lilting soft section which has staccato and legato moments with lots of accidentals. Then comes the middle section which has a different melody but still has moments of motif. This section is more expressive and louder. This section reaches its climax with both hands playing the same notes an octave a part, there is then a bar rest before the final section. Third and final section is a varioation on the first, it begins with the same melody but then repeats this with no accidentals and a different left hand pattern. The final phrase is a staccato section that ends with a motif and ends with a perfect cadence onto a C major chord. Contextual Features This piece is the first of 3 in Shostakovich's Three Fantastic Dances Op. 5. It starts with this Allegretto March then a Waltz and then a Polka (Adantino and Allegretto). This is one of the many pieces he has written for his main instrument: the piano. It is said that he composed this at the age of 15. Musical Features
