This short interlude from Newton Faulkner's album Hand Built by Robots includes a mixture of world instruments such as the Sitar (from India) the guitar and other western traditional string instruments. The mood of the piece is quite relaxed due to the relatively slow tempo and the sustained notes on the sitar. The melody is played by the sitar and includes a variety of pitch bends and ornaments (as is common on the instrument) the guitar accompaniment repeats the same pattern throughout the piece. Moments where sustained single notes are played by a violin (or equivalent) are distributed throughout the piece, these add atmosphere and usually coincide with the last note of a sitar phrase. A single note bass line can be heard faintly in the background which gives the whole piece depth and adds to the world music style of the piece. Because the piece is so short it generally stays at one dynamic level which I personally think adds to the laid back feel of the piece.
Structurally, the piece follows a simple ABA structure. In the A section the sitar melody is repeated twice, in the B section the melody changes and begins to descend from a higher pitch then the piece reverts back to its original melody to end, this form is much like the 'leaving the house' analogy we talked about.
Newton Faulkner is known for his alternative bringing together of different styles his songs are inspired by many genres such as: hip hop, folk and world music such as this. The guitar is Faulkner's main instrument, he continues to explore the musical opportunities it presents, he is frequently seen using the guitar as percussion, therefore the repetitive guitar accompaniment is expected. Within his albums he often puts in instrumental interludes to break up the other main songs, this is the context behind this piece.
