Daisy came to Tuesday's session with a new melodic idea for our inter-weaving section in 'Follow Me Down'. We discussed how it would fot in with the melodic lines we already had and, discussed how to merge the a capella (Gregorian style) chant with the opening main verse. Daisy suggested that we end the a capella section on the dominant chord so that we could cadence to the G tonic that starts the piano and guitar introduction.
Lucy spent the session in the studio with Jack and George recording the bass and listening to 'Over', which we all joined in with half way through the session, although this recording is beneficial for us as a band, it meant that we had less time to work on our new song. We decided, after airing these views, that lesson time should be used for writing new songs and that we should use our own free time to record.
As a result, Thursday's lesson was really productive. We started by discussing how the overall structure of the song was going to look because I was slightly confused as to where it was going. A lot of our decisions are made through group discussion and we soon came to the conclusion that the structure would consist roughly of: A Capella section - Main Verse (Sung by Daisy and Lucy) - 'I go' Harmony Section - Main Verse repeated (Sung by Bekah and I) - Repeated 'I Go' section - Built up inter-weaving section - Interweaving still present but as a backing for Main Verse repeat - Unison as the song goes back to 'I Go' section to finish.
Once this was established, we practiced the A Capella section by going through each harmony and making sure that each person knew exactly what they were sing, we then found that singing this section with more confidence made it sound stronger.
The inter-weaving section was surprising easy to sort out. Daisy began by singing her new melodic line (previously mentioned in the last blog), Lucy then enters after two bars with the original 'I wanted to be free' line, whilst Bekah and I then return to the a capella melody for 'Follow Me Down' in harmony. This inter-weaving then cresendoes when the inter-weaving parts continue whilst the main verse section theme returns.
After establishing the main bulk of the piece, we went back to go over the finer harmony details.
We will continue to perfect this song next week and hopefully start a new one!
Until next week,
Bethan :)
